Thanksgiving and Christmas

   Posted by: Lightning   in Uncategorized

Good Evening & Merry Christmas,

Well this year is coming to a close much faster than I thought it should. When I got back from shrimping, I had to get serious about getting ready for camping. Yeah, camping at Calhoun Falls what an awesome Thanksgiving. We started this last year and think this is going to be a family tradition. I was told about it and the description was correct, the whole campground smells like grandma’s kitchen. We will fix a traditional Thanksgiving meal in a very nontraditional fashion. I cook the turkey in an oil less turkey fryer and smoked the hams.

Claire and Meleeda will fire up the crock pots to cook dressing, macaroni and cheese, green beans, taters, bread and gravy. They also mixed stuff and baked stuff for all kind of deserts.

I will have to say after all of that all you need is a chair, fire and some good ole belly rubbing and a nap.

Of course the night also started of how bad the Clemson Tigers were gonna whoop up on those Carolina Gamecocks. We launched my pontoon earlier in the day and I had some real issues just trying to find the campsite, from the water the campsites don’t look the same. I also found out that the lake will get shallow on you real quick and will even stop a moving pontoon, quickly, twice. Friday we just relaxed, went boat riding when Daddy and Deda arrived and of course ate a little more. Saturday came and Meleeda and Anthony packed up and headed out because Anthony did not want to be away from home and cry when those Gamecocks got whooped. I even made friend with folks across the way and up from us who were all confused because they kept talking about the chickens. I told them I had plenty of Kleenexes to wipe their tears when those Tigers roared. Saturday evening came and we had our TV going outside and inside so everybody could hear those Tigers. Claire had fixed some good ole dip and other wholesome foods to keep us through the game. Well as you know if you fix crow right it ain’t that bad and we had all day Sunday to get that pie down. Well we were going to pack up and ease home Sunday afternoon. I then discovered that I left the hitch for Claire’s truck so she could pull the boat home, I tried to use mine on her truck but it had too much drop, so off to Possum Kingdom I came with the boat and then back to the campground to get the camper. We had an awesome time and got back home safe and sound.

December has brought great adventures with it, Abigail and I drove to Lumberton NC on December 3 so I could speak at Rita and Jerry Batten’s Church. Rita is Shawn Bissell, my donor, sister. We arrived in time to go out to eat with Jerry, Rita and Seth, Shawn’s nephew. We went to a shoot til you win kind of supper and I finally won, boy was I full. Abigail and I stayed at the Country Inn and Suites and really enjoyed our evening and breakfast there. We headed to the church and I felt I should get a bottle of water because I get such a dry mouth while talking. I pulled in a gas station and when we returned to the truck it would crank and then cut off. I let it roll out of the way and called for someone to pick us up, Abigail then said Daddy there is the church, it was two building down from us, so we walked to the church. God was at church when we arrived and he moved. I got to meet and make many new friends, I met David which was Shawn’s best friend who drove about 3 hours to come meet me and her my testimony. I also get the best church mechanics in the church to come over and give their diagnoses on my truck, it was not good. They came up with a collective diagnoses, it was the fuel pump. Seth made some phone calls and found a mechanic with a shop that would come in and work on my truck on Sunday. Seth rounded up the fuel pump. We had an extended dinner with Jerry and Rita and the Hunts, I got to hear the story first hand from James Hunt as he told me about being shot, whoshotprincipalhunt.blogspot.com/. We talked for a long time I think the restaurant wanted to charge rent for the table. God bless us as Christians because we got to share God’s love and sing his praises at the table that day. It was then we went to Jerry and Rita’s to rest while the repairs on our truck were under way. Jerry had to go to check on his mother’s so Rita, Abigail and I just talked and got to learn more about each other. The repairs were completed around 6 PM and we were soon on our way to Possum Kingdom and we arrived home around 11 PM.

On the way home Daddy call and told me that Dot Madden, my aunt and Daddy’s sister had been attacked by a dog and was in the hospital. She had nearly 5 hours of surgery and was placed in intensive care. She then had to be put on a ventilator to assist in her breathing and later in the week she was released from the hospital. She has a long way to go so please keep her in your prayers.

On December 11 I got to speak at Cedar Shoals Baptist Church for the evening service for our Donor Sabbath and we also had a great time. On December 13 I woke up sick, hurting all over, the doctor started me on a Z pack and by Friday I had to go for a chest x-ray. Waiting on the doctor’s official report but it seems I had a touch of pneumonia again in that left lung. We had our Christmas musical on the evening of December 18 and everyone done an outstanding job. If you have kept up with us in the past you know Claire hate to shop so Abigail & I do the Christmas shopping when she get’s out for Christmas break. I had to get better because Christmas had not been bought. God has blessed us and out we went this morning and we have all week to finish, we look forward to our Christmas shopping trip every year.

We here in Possum Kingdom hope you have a great and very Merry Christmas, Good Night.

God Bless You,
Pel

Fall, Thanksgiving & Eating

   Posted by: Lightning   in Uncategorized

Well as I sit here anticipating the moment that I fall asleep or get up and go to bed. The month is rapidly passing by and the leaves are rapidly falling but I sure do have a lot to be thankful of. Jesus died on the cross just for me and then my name was written down in the Lambs Book Of Life, is yours? I am so thankful for my salvation, my family, my church, my friends, my health and of course the list goes on.

Well let me catch you up since the last time. Chief and I went on a visit at Carolina Behavioral Health last Monday and it sure was a great time, we meet some new friends and look forward to the next visit. Anthony, my brother-in-law felt like he needed some attention so last week he decided that he would have an emergency surgery to remove his appendix. God blessed him and he is doing well, still a little slow but OK. I got a call last week from Bum and he said you want to go shrimping, and of course I said yelp, so we loaded up and off to Edisto. We arrived at John and Carol’s and they welcomed us with open arms. We spent the night and got up the next morning to the smell of a good ole breakfast, now that is the way to start a day. We loaded up all the items, meet our new friend Barney and after about a 3 minute drive we put the boat in the water. We rode for about 30 minutes on the water and arrived at our trawling destination and after a great day on the water we returned back to clean up and brag about the catch of the day, which was 30 quarts of beheaded shrimp. So far Claire and I have grilled and fixed scampi out of one quart.

Abigail had her awards day yesterday at Woodmont High School and she sure did make her Daddy proud.

I hope you have a great week, God Bless You and Good Night,

Fall

   Posted by: Lightning   in Uncategorized

Well Fall has fell in Possum Kingdom. It has wound up South Greenville Sports Fall Softball and it was a fun season with a couple of great coaches and I am so proud of Abigail, she had some great hits this year with two home runs. Justin and his mighty Yellow Jackets have finished their season in Aiken County and finished 3rd in the county. I am so proud of what he has accomplished and what his team has accomplished.

We had our Fall festival at church on Monday and I did not know that many people could fit through the gates to get in Possum Kingdom, we had a great time. I ran the hay ride, a trailer behind my Gator and it stayed busy until we closed the ride for the Trunk or Treat. When they turned all those rug rats alose for the candy well I will say that I am glad I was behind my Gator.

Chief and I are looking forward to some future therapy visits as we will be on one Monday at Carolina Behavioral Health and they really enjoys us coming to visit with them.

Well I better get in the bed so I will be ready for Sunday School at 9:30 in the morning. I hope you enjoy your day of worship with God almighty. I look forward to the next time we meet.

God Bless You,

Pel

October in Possum Kingdom

   Posted by: Lightning   in Uncategorized

Well October has started off with a busy fall schedule.

Chief and I went to Greer Monday evening on a therapy dog visit and going to Carolina Behavioral is such a blessing because the folks there really appreciate us being there, we know because they tell us and we can see the smiles. Tuesday afternoon brings a softball game and of course the discussion of the evening was, why did you not bring your math book home. Of course you know us Medlocks so for punishment I refused to stop at Pete’s Of Piedmont to eat with some of the team. However I did have to celebrate her home run hit with 2 RBI, so we stopped at the drive thru at McDonald’s for an ice cream. Wednesday I had to make a trip to Anderson to my lung doctor to see if I was still sick. NP Hall state that she could no longer hear the pneumonia but I have to keep my regiment going for another week and I have to return for a lung x-ray in a month. During the examination she did observe a bruise on my left back of chest area and of course there was a discussion. I then explained that last Saturday we had a cow to give birth to a healthy bull. Well for the ones of you that don’t know it is not a good idea to have to more than one bull in the pasture and besides that a steer will bring more at market than a bull will, so when we have a bull calf born the calf will get banded. Daddy will usually catch and band the calf within the first few hours of the birth, as was the case this time. Daddy went down in the woods by himself to band this calf, he placed a rope on the calf and about this time the mama cow had a real problem with this so she charged Daddy. Daddy retreated backward as the cow rapidly approached him and then Daddy fell backward on the ground stopping just short of a large rock behind his head. The mad mama cow with her head down in the charging mode stopped just as her head reached Daddy’s chest, so close he could feel her but she never hit him. The mama cow then retreated back to her calf. Daddy then decided that since they was just behind Meleeda and Anthony’s house he would get Anthony to come and help keep the mama cow off of him while he banded the calf, this was a good theory but it quickly turned to a bad idea. The next idea was to call fat boy, me to the woods to help distract the mad mama cow. Keep in mind she is really mad by now. Abigail, Rebel and I arrived on the gator to handle this mad mama cow. I got my stick and walked over to the cow and tapped her a couple of times, she acknowledged my presence by dropping her head but it was not a greeting and after a short snort she came after me like a blow fly after a honey wagon ( septic truck). She hit me with her head as I was retreating backward which did speed up my backwards momentum and then I quickly decelerated as I struck a couple of small trees just prior to falling to the ground, losing my hat and shoe and coming to rest in a gully. The mama cow then very quickly returned to stand by the side of her new born calf. Daddy has now made an upper management decision that was if we could get the rope off the calf the calf could remain a bull. I was still trying to get the leaves out of my hat and shoe and gasping for a quick breath and was able to utter a few words of wisdom saying, I had her distracted why did Y’all not deal with the calf while I had the cow down here in the woods. Daddy and Anthony both felt I should have kept the cow occupied longer. We of course had changed our goal now from banding the calf to just trying to turn him a lose. I walked back toward the cow and she acknowledged that she was ready for round two, I too acknowledged that I did not want leaves in my hat and shoe again. Abigail also acknowledged that there were things at the house she needed to do so she left the woods for the house. We made other moves to try to get the rope off the calf but the mama cow did not take kindly to any of our motions. I then got on the gator and drove around to the other side of the cow and calf and place the gator between me and the cow, she only looked on. I parked the gator and walked to the back and as I cleared the rear of the gator she heard a voice in her head that said “Get Fat Boy” and here she came so as she dodged the gator and some trees she was lured down in the woods a few feet, but long enough for the rope to be removed from the calf. By now you have gotten wrapped in this story and forgot where I was headed with all of this. It was the fact that NP Hall saw the hide that was scraped and the bruise on my back and she wanted to know what happened. I told her the cow was trying  to shake up the pneumonia for me. She did not think that was a good treatment plan and even put me on restriction from being propelled backwards by a cow and stopped by a tree, of course I’m in favor of that. I figured that I should not excite her with any other questions so I kept my mouth shut about Justin’s game later on that day.

I got home from Anderson in time to get ready, pick up Daddy and then we went to get Abigail from school and hit the road for Justin’s ballgame in Graniteville, SC. We enjoyed the game and of course the privilege to watch Justin coach his team, the game did not turn out how we hoped but we enjoyed ourselves. The next big dilemma of course is where we should eat. We had eat at a Huddle House the last time and I just did not want to eat there again so we drove on to Edgefield and stopped at La Fogata which was in an old Hardee’s building. We opened the truck door and right away recognized the odor, it was that of chicken liter, we then observed a trailer parked in the rear that was a poultry transport trailer, it was empty of poultry but there was no question that the poultry had been there. The food was great and the smell did not find it’s way to the inside but waited outside for us. We then made it back home with out any other events.

Thursday started out kind of slow and tired but the day went well and ended up the afternoon with a 6:00 PM softball game. The girls played a good game and I agreed to the traditional supper at Pete’s Of Piedmont and the Tilapia plate is just awesome.

Sunday morning I had the honor to combine my Sunday School class with the Spiritual Workers class and our main focus for the lesson was, be sure if you say it’s in the Bible be sure it is. We were privileged to have Rev. Jimmy Smith to preach at church this morning and evening, we enjoyed worshiping God together today.

Well another week gone and as I close this post I have just observed that it is 12:10 AM so a new week has begun. I hope you have an awesome week, smile at everyone you meet and let them see the love of God in you.

God Bless You,

Pel

   Posted by: Lightning   in Uncategorized

Well most of you don’t know this but 5 years ago today I retired from Anderson County Arson Unit. Today was much like that day 5 years ago, I just had a quite uneventful day. I am proud of my time I worked as a dedicated Anderson County Fire Commission employee. I am so proud of the 27 fire departments in the county because the fire commission may have not waved good bye but the the fire departments and firefighters sure did. I have lifelong friendships that were forged and nothing can ever break them. You know one of the great things is when I retired 5 years ago I only had about six months left to live short of a liver transplant according to the doctors. I now wonder how many bets were lost as you can tell I am still here, in other words I am not writing from the grave. I will have to say that my new job, Mr. Mom is the best job but the pay not so much, kind of compares to my pay as a public servant.

Well the pneumonia is better but still here, I was however able to go to Piedmont this afternoon to watch Abigail play softball, they tied and played a great game. I am looking forward to going to North Augusta Wednesday to watch Justin’s team win again.

I am going to say good night now I think the game and travel has wore me out so I am headed to bed.

God Bless You & Good Night,

Pel
